It’s the last day of
30 Days of Fashion and I have to admit I am a little sad about signing off. This month went by as fast as a Palin press conference. We have barely broken the seal on fall fashion. There is still so much to talk about. I haven’t even told you about my pants shopping experience or how I feel about country chic or flirty skirts or lace. I can’t believe we haven’t talked about lace. But I am consoled by knowing I can pass you on to people who seriously know fashion like my friends at
Harper’s BAZAAR, Cosmopolitan,
CosmoGirl,
O, The Oprah Magazine,
Seventeen,
Marie Claire,
Town & Country and the boys at
Esquire (whose new
Black Book style bible drops this month). I encourage you to check out their latest issues and go to all of their sites for your daily fashion fix or just to have some fun.

My father was an
aluminum salesman–perhaps not the sexiest of gigs, but it kept us well fed, put a roof over our heads and allowed for some memorable vacations. He’s since retired and now winters in Tarpon Springs where he plays (and replays in casual conversation) endless amounts of golf, but when he was selling the stuff there were always both shinny and dull samples around the house. When he wasn’t telling us to clean up our rooms, he was talking alloy and yield strength and comparing aluminum to other perhaps more glamorous metals praising its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, non-magnetism, recyclability resilience, and low cost, so you could say metallics are in my blood (I hope not literally because that, I am sure, can’t be good).

My designer friend
Erin Fetherston, you may have noticed she is one of our fashion insiders, craves them and I don’t know any of my closest fashion friends who don’t want, lust after or already own a pair of calf-covering riding boots.

I suspect most people, when they watch the pre-Emmy
red carpet fashion parade, are paying the most attention to the dresses, shoes, hair and dates and I am with most people there, but it is hard to ignore the dangling, sparkling and dazzling display of diamond jewelry that arrives each year on the bodies of all those A-listers.

So yesterday I was talking about change or at least wanting to make a change in my style and then I got a call from my new best friend
Ariane de Bonvoisin, the lovely, insightful and incredibly motivated Founder and CEO Chief Change Optimist of
First30Days.com. (I want a title like that: Sese, CEO Chief Looker On the Bright Side of Life or Glass Is Half Full Officer.)

Have you ever envied someone’s style so much that you have secretly (or openly) thought about chucking everything in your closet (more likely I would give it to a charity or my college-bound niece or the sister who was always “borrowing” stuff and I just bought that. I can’t believe you took that without asking) and pressing replay on your fashion choices?

It’s simply elementary that fashion and photography go together like shoes and handbags or better, fall and shopping, so you can imagine my excitement when Hearst announced yesterday an international biennial competition to recognize and showcase the professional work of talented young photographers called Hearst 8 X 10 Photography Biennial.

NY York Fashion Week ended on Friday and I spent the weekend decompressing (Pilates, hot stone massage and the last of the Chinon rose) It also meant saying good-bye to a few international fashion friends as they headed to London for the beginning of its week of frocks (and word is the 80s continues its hold on spring. I wish the dollar was trading like it did in the 80s, then I wouldn’t be just hearing about London Fashion week from those flush with euros and pound sterling).

If the new potential First Ladies are looking for clues on who they should be wearing to optimize stately refinement look no further than
Oscar de la Renta. Sure, Oscar rarely takes risks and as
Cathy Horyn in the
NYT suggested today perhaps “needs someone to push him in terms of design, specialness, “ but no one can deny de la Renta's year-after-year ability to create perfect elegance for the not-looking-to-push-the-envelope crowd.

It’s Thursday morning and the World did not end. Breathe in. Now exhale. That
proton firing, giant
particle smasher thing in
Switzerland (Just because it’s fashion week doesn’t mean I am not paying attention) didn’t create a world-swallowing
black hole (for now).

…and as I was saying... What I love about spring fashion is that it often has the power to transport you to far off sunny places where the air is warm, cocktails are served chilled (sometimes frozen) and no one is afraid of a little color.

Speaking of brand building... How much fun for me to exit the Bryant Park tents after a morning of fashion shows to not only bump into a flock of fashion girls handing out copies of 30 Days of Fashion, but also see a squadron of yellow cabs sporting 30DaysofFashion.com tops. Who is your milliner? Of course I had to hail one for the ride back to the office. As much as I like to show off my new Louboutins, I’m not walking fifteen blocks in them.

"When I Grow Up I Want To Be a Brand." I can imagine my 3-year-old niece (who is adorable by the way) saying this before she is out of kindergarten. Instead of building with blocks she will be building her brand–joining every playgroup she can, making sure she is photographed at birthday parties, Pixar premieres and school fundraisers. Before you know it she’ll have her own bag and logo and always wear her hair a certain way.

Okay, I’ll put it out there. I want to be Gwyneth Paltrow. And I don’t just mean I want GP’s life. No. I categorically, absolutely, unequivocally (and any other appropriately big, definitively declarative word) want to be her. First off, she is simply stunning. Did you see her in the those new Tod's ads, Esteé Lauder
SENSUOUS ads (proves that a simple, perfect white shirt sometimes is all you need to look devastating), or perhaps you saw her on the cover of July’s
BAZAAR in that just-below-her-bum black sequined Proenza Schouler or on the cover of
Cosmopolitan Style & Beauty Summer/Fall 2008. Coverline: Gwyneth Paltrow, How She Got Her Sizzling New Look. How? She’s Gwenyth Paltrow–it’s in her DNA.

It's the end of Labor Day weekend and I am not ready to relinquish my summer. Usually I am thrilled when the air temp chills a bit and fall's fashion inventory is already well rotated into my favortire shops, but this year I am almost inconsolable.

I know it’s Labor Day and no one in their right mind should be working or blogging or reading a blog or doing anything but soaking up those last precious hours of summer in that Bottega bikini you went way over your budget buying but had to have and justified by calculating how many days you’d be seen in it this summer and perhaps on that Christmas-New Years trip to the Riviera Maya (right now I am actually at a friend’s Hampton beach house stealing a moment between frozen margaritas, pool dips and double dipping the farm fresh salsa. No, I am glamorizing. It’s ridiculously early AM and I am sucking down my second cup of fair trade, organic shade grown Guatemalan coffee so I can post this and go back to bed) but today is Day One of 30 Days of Fashion and I just wanted to fill you in on what’s in store for you on this site
